Forty-third in line to the presidency, the Secretary of Education under President Richard Adar's administration was competent, and better than. This did not always mean she agreed with President Adar's policies; on one notable occasion, she informed him that she had taken steps toward achieving a diplomatic solution in breaking a teacher's strike gone violent, when he preferred a military approach. He asked for her resignation.

She informed him they'd discuss it upon her return from the decommissioning ceremony aboard one of the older battlestars in the Colonial Fleet.

Hours later Adar was dead, as were the forty-two men and women in front of her, as were billions of people all over the Twelve Colonies of Kobol. The Secretary of Education assumed the presidency -- and told as few as possible about the visit to her doctor, a few hours before her meeting with Adar.

Now the former secretary walks a line: protecting the civilians, placating the civilians, learning a completely unfamiliar military culture, winning the respect of that culture, figuring out which secrets to keep and which secrets to tell -- and adjusting to her own new potential role as prophetess.

Her name is Laura Roslin, she is the President of the Twelve Colonies of Kobol, and she has months to live.

But before she dies, she's going to see this fleet to Earth.
